On May 10, 2021, two construction workers sustained serious burn injuries from downed power lines near Fort Worth, Texas. According to one source, the two workers were using a rock hauler truck to drop off a load of dirt for a new overpass being constructed across Jacksboro Highway. The live power lines apparently fell onto the rock hopper truck, which energized the vehicle and seriously injured the driver and passenger. When the lines fell, they also hit a vehicle traveling westbound on SH 199, causing the vehicle to crash.
The Texas Utility Code requires electric utility companies to maintain their infrastructure in good working order and to elevate power lines at least 22 feet above roads. Likewise, companies working around power lines are required to coordinate with the electrical utility company and develop a work plan to ensure the safety of their employees.
