Wrong-Way Collision Kills One

On October 9, 2021, a driver headed the wrong way on SH-249 caused an accident which resulted in one fatality. The unnamed driver was traveling northbound on the southbound lanes of the highway in a Dodge Journey and clipped the front end of a Toyota Matrix.  Another driver tried to avoid the Dodge Journey and struck the Toyota Matrix, killing the driver.  Police are investigating why the driver of the Dodge Journey was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Texas led all 50 states in traffic fatalities in 2019—the most recent year from which comparative data is available—with 3,615 people killed in motor vehicle accidents.  Statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation show that the number of fatalities grew to 3,896 in 2020.
